Obama Administration Seeks Increased Regulation of Oil and Gas Industry

In 2016, the Obama administration plans to increase regulations over the oil and gas industry, according to an article by Law360. The article reports that among other things, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is finalizing a rule to reduce methane emissions from sources that include hydraulically fractured wells. Other federal agencies are also increasing their focus on the oil and gas industry. The U.S. Department of Interior’s Bureau of Land Management is finalizing rules to reduce venting and flaring from gas wells on public lands while the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration plans to introduce regulations concerning oil-carrying trains.
